Develop a Skill. Then Use It.
Pick up a skill. Practice until you achieve proficiency. Then use it when appropriate.
The Idea
- Build a set of skills you can rely on for life.
- Achieve proficiency — the point where the skill works reliably without significant mental effort. You no longer think about how. You just do.
- Use them when appropriate — not constantly, not on a schedule. When you need them.
Examples
- Running — practice until you can run a comfortable 5k or 10k. Then use it whenever you need to clear your head.
- Lifting weights — practice until you can comfortably lift heavy for your build. Then use it whenever you need a mood lift.
What This Is Not
- This is not about pushing the bar higher. That is a separate pursuit. This is about having the skill available when you need it.
- Proficiency is the goal. Excellence is optional.
PS. Never stop accumulating skills.
